Children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face a significantly higher risk of drowning, particularly those on the autism spectrum.
Studies show that children with autism are up to 160 times more likely to drown than their neurotypical peers due to wandering, limited safety awareness, and a strong attraction to water.
Between January 2021 and September 2024, 59% of school-aged children who drowned in Florida had autism, and 88 children with autism drowned during that time.
The Florida Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) recommends preventative measures such as early swim education, water safety awareness, and caregiver training.
